Your hosting choice will have more to do with your future online success than you might imagine. It's easy to surf the web, working the search engines to find cheap hosting or popular services. You will be tempted by all the flashy sales pages with enticing headlines, charts and what not. If you actually let the colorful sales hype convince you to pull out your credit card and sign up without asking questions, you are playing a dangerous game with your online credibility.
Before you get involved in something you cannot easily get out of, think about what you really need to decide before you do anything. Is your website going to be a personal website, concerned with family contact, your latest adventures or hobbies? This type of website would only need a simple hosting package and not one with all the bells and whistles.
How about one full of videos and audios for your visitors to access or download? You would need big-time gigabytes of space, extremely reliable functionality (Don't want freeze-ups when visitors are accessing your videos, do you?) and probably extra bandwidth allowances with all the uploading and downloading. Bandwidth would be a serious consideration here because you don't want your visitors waiting to access your slow site...they would never return.

A business site that provides technical information, data sheets, technical specifications, to their customers would have a definite need for a database, which requires increased limits for data transfer and bandwidth. If you exceed your selected limit of monthly data transfer, customers will not be able to get their information until next month. What would that do for your business? An ecommerce site will have product photos, shopping carts, payment processors, etc. All of these commercial functions normal to ecommerce businesses will eat up the limits on the hosting resource package you buy.
