Good Websites Start With Great Keywords

Domain Names Guide
by Chris David Young

One of the most frustrating things about building a website is having the perfect idea and nobody comes to visit. It's like throwing a huge party and you end up being the only one there. If you have ever experienced this, and you have put everything in place with your website, then you may have missed something at the beginning. All good websites start with great keywords.

It doesn't matter what you put on your website. You could have the best flash presentation, or the most beautiful graphics, if nobody is searching for it they aren't going to find it. Whenever you build a website you need to start with keywords that will pull people to your site. Finding the right keywords and putting them on your webpage in the proper manner is known as search engine optimization, or SEO for short. It is the very beginning of any good webpage.

There are two different types of keywords that you should be searching for. There are the more popular shorter keywords, and what is typically known as long tailed keywords. For example, if you had a website about dogs, the more popular keywords would be things such as dog or dog picture. There are many searches for these more popular types of keywords but the competition tends to be quite fierce. That is why you should also look for long tailed keywords, or keyword phrases that people are searching for that have less competition. On a dog site long tail keyword phrases would be things such as "pictures of beagle puppies" or perhaps "how to get my dog to stop barking". Until your website becomes very popular with the search engines you will have a better opportunity of being listed well for these long tailed keywords.

Another thing that you will need to make sure that you are doing with your keyword optimization is choosing keywords that people are actually searching for. There are many software programs online that will pull results from the meta search engines into a database. You can then search this database to see an estimation of how many searches that particular phrase gets. This will help to keep you from chasing your tail, and optimizing for dead end keyword phrases.

Using this type of keyword optimization is the best way to begin pulling traffic to your website. As your website grows in size and in popularity with the search engines, you will find that your traffic will grow as well. Just continue to mix in great keywords and you will find that it will continue to grow indefinitely.
